The Chocó Andino de Pichincha Biosphere Reserve was nominated in 2018 and spans 286,806 hectares. 1 It stretches from low foothill forests to high Andean landscapes (roughly 360m to 4,480m), creating a wide range of habitats in one region. 1

That habitat diversity is why the area is recognized for biodiversity and endemism. UNESCO notes thousands of plant species and rich wildlife across mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians. 1
